Strikeforce picks, Vegas-style: Fedor still a huge favorite over Hendo

Fedor Emelianenko's lost two straight, the second one pretty badly against Antonio "Big Foot" Silva, but the betting public still trusts in the former heavyweight king. On the Las Vegas betting boards, Fedor is a sizable minus-250 favorite to win tonight's fight in Chicago (Showtime 10 p.m. ET/PT).

"The MMA Insiders" host Kevin Iole and myself talked about how Fedor needs to approach Hendo (3:35 mark). Strikeforce announcer Frank Shamrock also appeared on ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas to speak about his experience in dealing with Henderson's strengths (5:22 mark).

This is one of Strikeforce's five-fight slates in recent memory. The odds say so with nothing bigger than a minus-250 favorite. All the underdogs have a solid shot at pulling the upset. Who has the best shot? Cagewriter says Paul Daley. If Daley stays off the ground, and that's a big if, his striking is too crisp for the inexperienced Tyron Woodley.

Bloody Elbow's cast of writers made their selections on all the fights. BE also tabs Daley as its top choice to pull off the upset. Six prognosticators chose Woodley and five sided with Daley.

Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson betting odds (Courtesy Lagasse's Stadium Las Vegas):
Dan Henderson (+200) vs. Fedor Emelianenko (-250) - Heavweight

Robbie Lawler (+150) vs. Tim Kennedy (-180) - Middleweight

Paul Daley (+170) vs. Tyron Woodley (-200) - Welterweight

Miesha Tate (Even) vs. Marloes Coenen (-130) - 135 pound title fight

Scott Smith (+190) vs. Tarec Saffiedine (-240) - Welterweight

Voelker recovers from bad start, TKOs Bowling in second

Book Bobby Voelker-Roger Bowling fights every month! What fan is going to complain? They've fought three times and each bout has been a barnburner. Friday night at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, Voelker scored a nice comeback win by landing a nasty knee in the second round that Bowling never recovered from. Voelker wobbled Bowling with a right knee, saw his opponent's legs fail him, and then finished with nine unanswered shots on the ground at 2:15 of the second round at Strikeforce Challengers 17 .

"It was pretty suspenseful," Voelker told Showtime's Mauro Ranallo. "He was winning the whole way."

Voelker recovers from bad start, TKOs Bowling in second

Voelker's now won two straight against Bowling, but the loser has nothing to be ashamed about. Bowling outclassed Voelker (24-8) throughout the first round. He dominated the stand up with nasty legs kicks and a great left hook. He actually had Voelker on shaky legs in the final minute of the first, but didn't pour it on.

For some reason in the second, Bowling tried to wrestle and work the clinch game. At 5-foot-8, against the 6-1 Voelker, that proved to be a horrible move. With his back on the cage, Voelker got a thai clinch on Bowling's head and pulled his noggin down into that big  knee. Bowling stumbled backwards and his legs were gone.

Voelker deserves a lot of credit. Some of Bowling's shots in the first would've broken a weaker fighter. The 32-year-old said it was part of the plan against the less-experienced Bowling.

"I just knew he was coming in hard. He always does, that's the way he fights. It's just balls to the wall, ready to take your head off," Voelker said. "I knew I had to wait a little bit, weather the storm and he'd lower his hands a little bit or fade, and I'd catch him with something like I did."

Voelker's won 4-of-5 with Strikeforce and may set for a jump to Strikeforce's bigger shows. According to Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker is considering giving Voelker the winner of the Scott Smith-Tarec Saffiedine fight.

Nothing ?tricky? about St. Preux tonight at Strikeforce Challengers 17, a big knee ends Cason?s chancesOvince St. Preux had no intentions of going from the gridiron to the cage, but trainer Eric Turner tricked him into fighting mixed martial arts. Turner saw the potential in the former Tennessee Volunteers' linebacker and convinced him that the punches in the cage weren't that hard.

Four years later OSP is the one dishing out the pain. Joe Cason felt his power tonight in Las Vegas when he ate a knee to the face and a shin to the ribs. Cason was shot. Seconds later, the fight hit the deck where St. Preux eventually got off five huge shots, splattering Cason's blood on the canvas, and the downed fighter tapped due to strikes at 1:12 of the first round at Strikeforce Challengers 17.

The Haitian-American, who was a high school football star in Immokalee, Fla. prior to his time at Tennessee, has won eight straight and is 5-0 with Strikeforce. OSP thinks it's time for step up in competition and a promotion to Strikeforce's bigger shows.

"I think the fans have been talking about it. I think the fans want it. I'll be calling out lots of people ... Gegard [Mousasi], [Renato] 'Babalu' [Sobral]. I'm definitely ready to step up," said St. Preux, 28.

OSP (11-4) still works out of Knoxville, Tenn. the home of the University of Tennessee, but with some time off after his last fight in January, he made sure to travel around the country to train with new camps.

Most of his learning in 2010 came in the cage as he fought six times. With some time away from active fights, he worked with Dan Henderson's camp in Temecula, Ca. and also made his way to Denver to train at Grudge Training Center, the home of fighters like Brendan Schaub, Nate Marquardt and Shane Carwin.

Cason comes from a good camp as well, with Duke Roufus in Milwaukee, and it was clear the formerly unbeaten light heavyweight had a swagger about him and came to fight. But his aggression actually cost him as OSP used good footwork to avoid big shots and get off some counterstrikes.

The strike that destroyed Cason was unique. Cason charged St. Preux and the rangier ex-football star attempted a body kick. The leg never fully uncoiled, but with Cason coming forward he got drilled under his chin by OSP's knee and his shin crushed his ribs. The double-dose of pain wobbled Cason and he never recovered.

St. Preux has told the "tricked into fighting" story many times including again this week when he appeared on ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas.

"My biggest thing was about getting hit," said St. Preux, who played football at 6-foot-3, 248 pounds. "[Turner] had some 18-ounce boxing gloves on; he kind of hit me in the arm. He said, 'This is the hardest you're going to get hit.'"

When St. Preux fought for the first time and got blasted by an opponent who was wearing MMA's official five-ounce gloves, OSP realized he'd been duped. St. Preux knew he was in a fight, but he didn't freak out. His athleticism showed when he first started in the game and it's really paying off now. Cason was too slow to avoid the inevitable beating tonight in Sin City.

UFC 135 hype begins with good trash talk between Jones and ?Rampage?Where's the hook? Some fans may have asked that question when the Jon Jones-Quinton "Rampage" Jackson fight was announced for UFC 135.

After watching today's press conference in Denver, there's certainly some great angles we'll be discussing before the October fight - Old vs. young, washed up vs. overhyped along with who's cockier?

Rampage brought his top notch trash talking skills to Denver. He got off some doozies which included mocking Jones (GIF) for his unorthodox staredown.

Jackson said Jones reminds him of his former reality show adversary Rashad Evans.

"Him and Rashad got something in common. They're both really cocky. I'm confident, very confident in myself. There's a difference. Last time I was this confident, I knocked someone [Chuck Liddell] out in the first round and got that belt," Jackson said during the prefight press conference right outside the Pepsi Center . "I've been working hard, training and doing all the right things, all the stuff I need to be doing. That belt's coming back to me, for real."

Jackson also tried to diminish the Jones' win that got him the UFC light heavyweight title.

"I just have to say, straight up, I respect you dog. I do think you are the future of MMA, straight-up. I'm keeping it real. But you fought [Mauricio] 'Shogun' Rua when he was rusty as hell. He hadn't fought for a year. He had like two knee surgeries."

Jones suggested there will also be excuses from folks after he beats Jackson.

"He didn't fight the PRIDE Rampage, he fought the movie-star Rampage, so there will always be excuses," said Jones.

Then Jackson went on the offensive over being called old by some fans and media.

"I'm only 33. Goodness. You all act like I'm Randy Couture's decrepit old ass, Jackson said. "You know, if I have to represent the old school, I guess I'll represent them. I guess I'm old school, but with old school comes a lot of experience. He's the youngest champion, but I think [Jones is] the least experienced champion in UFC history."

Tate grinds her way to women?s 135-pound title, finishing with a side chokeMiesha Tate wrestled with the boys in high school, so there's little mystery to her game. She wanted to get Marloes Coenen down, and down often.

After spending 10-plus minutes on her back, a warn down Coenen found herself in a nasty arm-triangle choke in the middle of the fourth round. Referee John McCarthy called a stop to things at 3:03 of the round giving the Strikeforce women's bantamweight title to Tate.

At just 24 years old, Tate (12-2) may be the future of the division, but the women's 135 class has another young lady in her mid-20's. Sarah Kaufman, 25, beat Tate back in 2009 on a Strikeforce Challengers card and will probably get the next crack at the title holder.

Tate's explained that her experience with the boys in high school was the genesis of this title run.

"It made me tough. It's a big, huge reason why I'm here today," said Tate, who wrestled in Olympia, Washington. "That toughness got me through that fight. Marloes is no joke."

Her recent path to the cage was far from easy.

"I had a good start to my training camp, a rough finish. That's what makes the heart of a champion, it's tough times. Tough times only make you tougher," said Tate.

Coenen (19-5) is a very solid fighter with good striking and submission skills, but her stiffness on the feet and lack of  side-to-side movement killed her chance of defending takedowns. She was too often a sitting duck for Tate, who was good on 5-of-6 takedown attempts.

Working in the business: Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports columnistMMA is not just a sport, but also a business that creates jobs for people all over the world. Cagewriter takes a look at some of the people and jobs that keep the MMA wheels churning. First up: Yahoo! Sports columnist Kevin Iole.

Cagewriter: What are your job duties?

Kevin Iole: My job is to come up with feature stories and columns that would appeal to a wide audience that follows boxing or MMA. Occasionally, I cover events, I meet with a fighter, sometimes I go to lunch or dinner with a fighter or manager.

Hardly a day goes by where I don't do a radio interview of one sort or another. A lot of times I'll do short TV gigs, discussing upcoming fights or my thoughts on fighter.

I'm supposed to stay on top of breaking news from an analytical standpoint. When news breaks, what does it mean? It's not necessarily my job to be the first guy to get it out there, but it's my job to explain to people the significance of the news.

CW: But you do break news sometimes.

KI: A lot of times, what I do when I get up in the morning, something as a reporter for more than 30 years I've gotten in the habit of doing, is make calls to people in the industry. That's how you find stories. That's how you develop relationships with people. That's the biggest part in our business. I find a lot of good stories that way, and I ending breaking news that way.

CW: What is the best part of your job?

KI: I can really live a dream. Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be a sportswriter. I love fights. I love both boxing and MMA, and I get to write about the biggest fights, the biggest stars, to say my opinion on a day-to-day basis. I can't imagine doing anything else.

CW: But what's the worst part?

KI: The biggest downside is that I can't be a fan. I'm a fan of the Steelers, and if the Steelers score a touchdown, I'm standing up cheering. I'm clapping my hands. When I cover fights, I may see some of the best fights in history, and I can't cheer. I can't clap my hands. I can't root for any particular side. I've got to be neutral.

The other downside is travel. Getting on airplanes, staying in hotels, being away from my family. I did over 100,000 miles in travel for Yahoo! last year. As much as being in exotic places is nice, I wish there was a Star Trek thing where I could get beamed into these places.

CW: What did you do before this to prepare you to be a columnist?

KI: I was a reporter for many years. I started with a small paper in Pittsburgh, and then moved to Vermont. I was there for close to 10 years, and then after having met my wife, she and I moved to Las Vegas. I was with the Las Vegas Review-Journal for about 17 years. By the time I got to Yahoo!, I had over 25 years of experience as a reporter.

CW: What advice would you give to someone starting out in MMA journalism?

KI: The first thing is to just write a lot. If you're sitting at home watching the fight, run back to your computer and write about it. Compare it to what other people do.

The second thing is read a lot of good writing. Whoever you think is a good writer, whether it be in boxing, MMA, or any other sports, read good writing. Pay attention to how they transition from paragraph to paragraph, or how they make their case. Also understand what the elements of a news story are.

Look at your work with a critical eye and ask, what could I have done better? How does somebody else do that exact same story? What points do they make better? Why is their story better than mine? If you look at that and pay attention, you're going to be able to do it. Assuming that when someone wants to be a writer, they have some skills to begin with, it's just a matter of developing them. It's not something that comes naturally. Sometimes, it's a long and tortured process.

You have to go through it multiple times before you decide that's the final product. Sometimes, people want to sit down and after 15 or 20 minutes and say, 'OK, I'm done,' and think that what they have is the best they can do. They can definitely do better.

A lot of young writers are too wordy, and they use too many big and extraneous words that can be left out. A good rule of thumb is less is more. You need to think if somebody on the subway on the way to work, they're reading your piece. Are they going to jab the guy next to them and say, 'Hey, read this?' Or will they just go to something else. If you know they're going to jab the guy, then you've done your job. If not, you've got to work to do.
